The Doctoral School will last four years full-time, or up to eight years if attended part-time, representing an outstanding opportunity for all emerging artists who intend to transform their artistic practice into a professional career. The first doctoral cycle will start in the 2024/25 Academic Year, from November 2024. The requirements to obtain one of the available scholarships are multiple (including a Second Level Academic Degree, an excellent level of English and a documented artistic practice), but without any restrictions regarding fields of study or artistic area, in line with the interdisciplinary nature of the Academy and its aim to welcome people from a wide variety of disciplinary fields, from fashion to costume, visual arts and design in all its meanings, graphic arts, sound arts, performing arts, cinema and new media, set design, new technologies.

The new NABA PhD in Artistic Practice will not focus purely on theoretical research but will instead accord the same importance to artistic practice as a research method, allowing young artists to develop their practical creation of original works of art or performances through institutional and international support, combining a multidisciplinary approach with a practice-based approach and a deep involvement in artistic and cultural life. In addition to focusing on their own research project and dedicating time to the development of artistic practice monitored by NABA and Gothenburg University representatives, during the programme, students will have the opportunity to attend both NABA and Swedish University courses and share their ideas with the artistic community of the two countries.
