A glance towards the extraordinary to recognise it and watch the Urbe in a different way: Open House Rome celebrates hundreds of prestigious architectures. NABA is taking part in the 2022 edition. On Saturday, May 21, the Academy welcomes visitors to its campus in Via Ostiense 92 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It will also be an opportunity to discover the exhibition itinerary set up by the students.
Open House and NABA: the historic building and the exhibition itinerary
Between the Tiber and the Ostiense area, there is an urban context rich in cultural centres. It comes from the conversion of industrial buildings. The NABA Rome campus results from that same process of architectural regeneration. Opening its doors means bringing out the renewal of the building as much as its history.
On Saturday, May 21, NABA professors and students will welcome visitors and take them through an exhibition itinerary that sheds light on the projects carried out by different Areas of the Academy.
Communication and Graphic Design Area will display in Room 2.02, the video exhibition "E se fosse? Immaginare scenari futuri" by the students of the BA in Graphic Design and Art Direction. Patrizia Moschella (Communication and Graphic Design Area Leader), Dionigi Matteo Gagliardi and Gianluca Abbate are the NABA Lecturers and intervention’s supervisors; Assunta Squitieri (BA in Graphic Design and Art Direction Advisor Leader - Rome), is the curator. Here, three visual identity studies offer a new interpretation of the Ex Macello. Imagines are intertwined with the words and feelings of the community living in the neighbourhood. Moving to Room 2.04, visitors come across "Costellazioni Urbane", an installation by the students of the same BA, curated by Valerio Polici (NABA lecturer). It reconstructs stages of the creative process on the table used by students during classes.
Fashion Design Area will present the documentary "Fashion Poetry" by Silvia Morani (NABA lecturer). In Room 3.07, it will be possible to watch the film showing the most significant moments of the workshop held by Olivier Saillard (fashion critic and curator) in December 2021 on the Rome campus. The film also features a performance by model Axelle Doué wearing clothes made by students.
Media Design and New Technologies Area will present four projects. In Room 3.02, two films are on the screen. "Writers of Garbatella" was produced thanks to the contribution of Beatrice Baldacci (Medialab NABA Rome), Vincenzo Cuccia (Media Design and New Technologies, and Set Design Area Leader) and Giovanni Giommi (NABA lecturer). The second one - “La consapevolezza del buio” - was made within the course by Giovanni Giommi himself. By showing the life of the street artist group WPRS, "Writers of Garbatella" tells the story of the new generations living in the neighbourhood. "La consapevolezza del buio" is a film collage about the dreams of Fabio, a man who became blind at 35. The two audio documentaries will be played in Room 3.06. Both were produced under the guidance of Rodolfo Sacchettini (NABA lecturer). The first is "Voci di Garbatella", a social and urban fresco filmed for the 100th anniversary of the district's birth. The second - "Punto Coming Out" - pays homage to the historic club in Via San Giovanni in Laterano, a hot spot of the LGBT community in Rome.
In Rooms 0.02 and 0.03, students of Visual Arts Area set "Sui muri. Manifesti dall'archivio del Villaggio Globale (1990-2005)". The exhibition will take place in the Academy and at Villaggio Globale spaces. It displays audio, posters, and archive materials telling of an era of artistic experimentation, social activism, political militancy and international cultural commitment.
