NABA is participating in “Artificial Creativity. Lo studio intorno al ruolo dell’Intelligenza Artificiale (IA) sulla più umana delle competenze,” an international two-day event held in English, promoted by Università Telematica Pegaso in partnership with the Academy and SAE Institute Milan, hosted by the latter on June 28 and 29. NABA will contribute to the event’s schedule with two out of five panels, each dedicated to a specific aspect of the debate on AI and Computational Creativity.

NABA’s participation in “Artificial Creativity”: the topics addressed

The field of Research on Creative Practice is constantly reshaped by the emergence of new technologies. While we are still striving to understand the implications of digital technologies on the evolution of production, distribution, and exhibition methods, we are witnessing the advent of "intelligent" technologies such as AI and machine learning. How do they impact cultural and artistic production? What is the future of the creative industry?

At “Artificial Creativity,” discussions will focus on the complexity of isolating the contribution of intelligent technologies in our daily practices. AI systems, in particular, are increasingly invisible to users' eyes, yet their influence is felt within the creative industries. The Digital Humanities, a macro-disciplinary field encompassing both engineering and the humanities, addresses these issues by reflecting on the alterations or adaptations in the concept of art, culture, and authorship.

NABA participates in “Artificial Creativity”: the Academy’s panels

The conference will commence on Friday, June 28, with an institutional introduction from 9:00 to 9:45 AM, featuring Luca Poncellini (NABA Design and Applied Arts Department Head). Within the panel “Artificial Imaginary: Narratives, Culture and Counterculture about AI,” held on Friday, June 28, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, Elisa Poli (NABA Research Program Leader) will present “The Storyteller. Reflections on the relationship between narrative, imagination and AI.” The talk will turn the spotlight on AI through analysing narrative works as both plot and moving image, viewed as a phenomenological process and a repository of philosophical theories. This investigation draws on examples from various books, films, and television series, from the most renowned science fiction masterpieces to classic and philosophical texts, to understand how they contain realised premonitions and unresolved questions about rapid technological growth.

The second NABA panel at the event, in collaboration with Università Telematica Pegaso and SAE Institute Milan, will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Entitled “New Gaze Era: Digital Images, Visual Effects and Audiovisual Products” and moderated by Corrado Santoro (SAE Institute Milan) and Fabio Pelagalli (NABA Masters of Arts of Communication and Graphic Design Area Course Leader), it will include several presentations addressing the following topics: the use of AI as a tool to stimulate creativity in the elderly with promising results; the impact of AI on the fashion industry and its influence on notions of “body” and “beauty”; the perspective of creative professionals on using GenAI tools for the production of comics, illustrations, and visual arts; the intersection between artificial intelligence and digital storytelling in the context of preserving and disseminating World Heritage; and the analysis of trends in visual representations of AI across media.

NABA participates in “Artificial Creativity”: “P+ARTS. Partnership for Artistic Research in Technology and Sustainability”

The “Artificial Creativity” conference is also part of a significant inter-academic research project funded through the PNRR funds of the MUR. This project features NABA as the lead institution, SAE as a project partner, and Università Telematica Pegaso as an associate partner: “P+ARTS. Partnership for Artistic Research in Technology and Sustainability”. This initiative aims to establish a multidisciplinary consortium for artistic research and also focuses on the creation of a doctoral framework dedicated to AFAM disciplines—one of the first in Italy and highly innovative for its emphasis on new technologies, fully aligned with the research areas of the Digital Humanities. The project is dedicated to creating an Italian artistic ecosystem of excellence based on interdisciplinarity, internationalisation, and research.

Envisioned as a unifying force between disciplines and geographical areas, this innovative driver of transformation brings together eight Alta Formazione Artistica institutions (NABA, Fondazione Accademia Teatro alla Scala, Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, Conservatorio di Milano, Accademia di Belle Arti di Bari, Conservatorio di Matera, IAAD. Istituto d'Arte Applicata e Design, SAE Institute Milan) and two Public Universities (Politecnico di Bari and Università di Bolzano). “P+ARTS” addresses three fundamental objectives, which Elisa Poli (Scientific Coordinator) will present at “Artificial Creativity”: the promotion of a culture of artistic research through cooperation among Alta Formazione Artistica, Musicale e coreutica institutions; the promotion of innovation in art and culture; and the redefinition of the role of the artist in contemporary society.
