Following the talk held in NABA on April 23, 2024, with Jindrich Janicek, which marked the launch of the international festival “BABA JAGA Europe 2024-2025”, the Spazio MAGMA within the Rome Campus (Via Ostiense 92) will host the dual solo exhibition “Sleep Bump” by Jagoda Czarnowka and Bartosz Zaskorski on November 22 and 23.

In the preceding days, the duo will lead a workshop with Academy students whose outcomes, together with the artists’ work, will be featured in the exhibition as part of the festival’s official programme.

NABA hosts “BABA JAGA Europe 2024-25”: the exhibition “Sleep Bump” by the duo Jagoda Czarnowska and Bartosz Zaskórski

The exhibition “Sleep Bump,” curated by the festival’s artistic directors Alessio Trabacchini (Bachelor of Arts in Comics and Visual Storytelling Course Leader – NABA Rome) and Serena Dovì (Founder of Risma), will feature Polish artist Jagoda Czarnowska (a Polish artist, animator, illustrator, and painter) in a dual solo show alongside Bartosz Zaskórski (author of comics, drawings, and short stories). Together, they present a cohesive narrative composed of Zaskórski’s deformities and monstrosities and Czarnowska’s figures lying somewhere between surrealism and psychedelia.

This exploration delves into the realms of dreams, the subconscious, and the repressed corners of memory. The works on display, a dialogue between recent creations and past works, form a fragmented landscape where the unspoken and the invisible take shape, inviting the viewer to engage with the darker and more unfamiliar parts of the mind.

NABA hosts “BABA JAGA Europe 2024-25”: the festival

“BABA JAGA Europe 2024-2025” is an international festival focused on visual storytelling aimed at promoting and connecting the artistic scene of Eastern Europe with the broader European cultural landscape. Created to address a gap in the translation and publication of Eastern European comics in Italy and vice versa, it highlights the importance of comics and illustration in conveying stories of marginalisation, inclusion, diversity, and local histories, fostering intercultural dialogue and understanding.

Through various activities, including artist residencies, exhibitions, workshops, and roundtables, “BABA JAGA Europe 2024-2025” seeks to facilitate artistic exchange, promote innovative cultural productions, and increase the visibility of Eastern European artists within the European market. With a particular focus on countries with strong artistic scenes but limited representation in the broader European context, the festival aims to bridge this gap and create opportunities for collaboration and recognition.
