On Tuesday, April 23 at 6:00 PM, the NABA Rome Campus (Via Ostiense 92) will host a talk by Czech illustrator Jindřich Janíček during his artistic residency at the creative hub of Industrie Fluviali (Via del Porto Fluviale 35, Rome) in the Ostiense area. The meeting, entitled “Comics Trips. Viaggiare, disegnare un po’, viaggiare ancora”, will be introduced by Alessio Trabacchini (Bachelor of Arts in Comics and Visual Storytelling Course Leader – a course which will be added to the educational offerings of the Rome Campus starting from the Academic Year 2024/25), and moderated by Carlotta Vacchelli (researcher at the Max Planck Institute).
The talk marks the first public event of Baba Jaga Europe 24-25 (BJE2425), the international festival of comics and illustration promoted by Industrie Fluviali, with Alessio Trabacchini as artistic director.
“Comics Trips. Viaggiare, disegnare un po’, viaggiare ancora” and upcoming collaborations with Baba Jaga Europe 24-25
Jindřich Janíček, illustrator and co-founder of the independent publishing house Take Take, with an original eye for subcultural icons and the epic of the mundane, has captured the essence of many corners of the United States, giving life to numerous narratives, including graphic memoirs, comics, and travel diaries. He has represented the essence of travel with the same gaze: from portraits of 68 American vans to Oregon bridges to his recent experiments depicting bicycles. During the talk "Comics Trips. Viaggiare, disegnare un po’, viaggiare ancora" on April 23, drawing from his experience, he will chart a course to explore the processes through which illustration captures the essence of places and discoveries on the road.
The event marks the beginning of the NABA Rome Campus collaboration with the festival, which in the coming months will unfold through an exhibition of the Baba Jaga circuit at the Rome Campus and a workshop designed for students by one of the festival's illustrators.
Baba Jaga Europe 24-25
Baba Jaga Europe 2024-2025 is an international festival focused on visual storytelling, aimed at promoting and connecting the Eastern European art scene with the broader European cultural landscape. Originating from the success of the Baba Jaga Fest 2022 in Italy, the festival highlights the significance of comics and illustration in conveying stories of marginalisation, inclusion, diversity, and the history of places, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and understanding through artistic residencies, exhibitions, workshops, and panel discussions. The main activities of the festival will be centred in Rome (Industrie Fluviali), Prague (Frame Festival), and Riga (kuš! Comics), including a business market for European publishers and a publication featuring unreleased works.
