Who is the UX/UI Designer?

User experience is a decisive factor for the success of a product or service within an increasingly diverse, broad and accessible market. UX/UI Designers are key figures in private and public companies and organisations. Their responsibilities range from product research and target definition to designing the human interface of the digital platform of the product or service itself. Fulfilment of the role requires technological skills and strong visual acumen.

What does a UX/UI Designer do?

In a broad sense, the role of the UX/UI Designer is to design and coordinate the interactions and processes underlying communication between organisations that provide products or services and their users. Preliminary tasks include researching and defining the target audience in order to frame its needs, desires and behaviour in relation to a product or service. Once this ideal subject has been parameterised, the design of the actual experience can begin, starting with the most agile and effective customer journey, flows, experience maps and wireframes. The visual aspect of the User Interface (UI) of the product or service platform is crucial. Therefore, the professional creates layouts, graphic elements and styles that reflect the brand and project an aesthetic that should appeal to the target group. Once the first design and prototyping phase is completed, the actual effectiveness of the experience is assessed (e.g. by A/B testing) and improvements are made. Over time, the UX/UI Designer monitors key metrics to adapt the experience in response to the assessment findings.

What skills should a UX/UI Designer have?

To make a decisive contribution to defining the user experience requires an equal measure of strategic skills and excellent knowledge of graphics fundamentals and tools.

  • Ability to use web or mobile design, prototyping and development tools
  • In-depth knowledge of user-centred design
  • Skills in the use of graphics tools
  • Knowledge of communication and marketing dynamics
  • Critical thinking and willingness to work in teams to analyse, design, test and adapt the user experience in accordance with the results.

How to become a UX/UI Designer?

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, a UX/UI Designer must have skills ranging from the ability to define processes to graphic design. These skills can be acquired at NABA as part of the Two-year Specialisation Course in User Experience Design. The programme imparts theoretical, technical and methodological knowledge for the design of complex digital communication systems. The curricula aim to stimulate creativity, guide strategic vision, and teach an analytical and systematic approach to design that references cognitive psychology and contemporary visual culture. Digital interface techniques are examined and studied, focusing on user experience and information architecture.
