Starting from an idea, a narrative trigger or from the foreshadowing of a storyline, screenwriters are authors who image and deliver a film through a written text. A dynamic and constantly evolving text, both in form and in contents.
Story, process and treatment are preparatory phases to create a screenplay, a final plot outline delivered to the director, before the actual film shooting starts. Lately, screenwriters have gained further relevance due to their central role in tv serial production, which requires writing stories with a complex narrative, extended in time. This professional figure has evolved, working in close collaboration with the showrunner, who is responsible of the overall architecture of the series.
To become a professional screenwriter you must engage in writing audio-visual works, both for cinema and television, with the ability to express a lively creativity, a personal view, but also a dynamic adaptability to different themes, to comply with a constantly evolving professional world. A contemporary screenwriter should be able to write texts which adapt to different audio-visual formats, varying from just a few minutes to three hours, being either research works or even more commercial productions, always ensuring professional maturity.
