Who is a Producer

The making of a film or television series involves different phases and multiple resources. Their coordination is organized by Producers – a professional figure skilled in coordinating professionals as well as managing the project’s financial, creative and logistical aspects. Their ultimate goal is that the end result meets artistic and business expectations. Skills required to cover this role range from interpersonal skills to an understanding of the film and television industry.

What do Producers do?

The role of Producers in film and television includes a number of responsibilities. First of all are the first steps of project development. This is where ideas take shape, screenwriters or writers are chosen, and the overall creative direction is defined. At the same time, funding is raised, rights are acquired, and the necessary permissions are obtained to carry out the project. An indispensable task to carry out the work is financial planning and management, which includes assessment and supervision of expenses, negotiation of contracts, and budget checks. Included in the production organization is staff management, coordination of filming, and location planning. Finally, Producers make sure that the final quality is high.

What skills must Producers have?

Technical, managerial, and creative skills are indispensable in a producer's skill set. A strong background ensures the success of a film or television project.

  • Knowledge of film and TV: understanding of the industry, trends, markets and distribution dynamics.
  • Financial and business skills: knowledge and skills in relation to fund raising, budget management, contract negotiation.
  • Organizational skills: ability in resource management, shoots planning, and logistics organization.

Soft skills: managing a production means being able to make important decisions, organize and motivate a team. Equally important is the ability to communicate and mediate persuasively with crew, funders, and other stakeholders.

How to become a Producer?

Some of the skills described in the previous paragraph come from experience and refinement of expertise acquired in time. However, knowledge of the film industry, market trends and its logics can be acquired through an academic training course. NABA's Three-year BA in Cinema and Animation was created with the aim of training professionals in the creation of audiovisual projects for both live action and animation productions. These skills can be perfected within the Academic Master's in Screenwriting for Series, which provides the knowledge to identify themes and narratives in an ever-changing world, in order to develop film or serial projects of national and international relevance.
