What is the Merchandiser?

Merchandisers are professionals in the fashion industry, in charge of planning and elaborating the collection and products according to the market and to the specific trends of a season.

With a great vision that encompasses all areas of the system, these professionals have the task of identifying, together with designers, which collection products are most in demand, also based on a strategic sales process.  

Being aware of the different contemporary marketing approaches, in their many aspects, these professionals are able to understand brand identity logics, recognise trends and possess technical skills in the field of textiles, prototyping and collection development, in addition to a strong cultural-historical background.

What does a Merchandiser do?

Merchandisers are responsible for supporting Fashion Designers in developing a collection, according to a product design strategy.

Analytically and systematically reviewing all stages involved in the creation of a fashion product, Merchandisers are able to propose a collection development strategy aimed at sales and taking into account the media, trends and target audience.

What skills must a Merchandiser have?

  • Ability to work in a team
  • Specific knowledge of marketing and product sales
  • Awareness of body, identity, gender, decolonisation and sustainability issues
  • Interdisciplinarity between the various fields of design and the arts
  • Research and development ability
  • Connecting experimentation with market demands

How to become a Merchandiser?

You can become a Merchandiser through a university degree or a first level and second level academic diploma.
