Who is a Game Developer

The gaming sector has been growing for years and gaming concepts are becoming increasingly diverse. This is all the more true with the spread of XR, AR and VR. A direct consequence of video games’ commercial success are specialisation and a high demand for professionals with creativity and expertise to offer for companies. Among the pivotal roles is that of the Game Developer - a professional who deals with the creation of interactive and immersive experiences. Skills range from design, to games development and implementation.

What do Game Developers do?

Developers deal with a range of activities whose ultimate goal is creating a video game. In the design phase, they work with a creative team to define concept, plot, characters, gameplay and other key aspects of the game. Following this, they work on the code creation and implement gameplay, visual effects, physics and other game features. In the testing phase, they work to find and fix bugs, performance issues or other imperfections in order to ensure a smooth and high-quality experience on different platforms. In all these stages, collaboration with artists, designers, musicians and other professionals is crucial to make a valuable contribution and integrate visual, sound and narrative elements into the game.

What skills should a Game Developer have?

The above description offers an idea of the set of skills that Game Developers must have, in addition to the necessary creativity to work on the concept and experience design. Below, we list them by points.

  • Programming: in-depth knowledge of programming languages such as C++, C# or Python (essential for writing the game code and implementing required functionalities).
  • Development: knowledge of platforms, familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, ability to use effectively the relevant development tools.
  • Game design: understanding and ability to apply game design principles and dynamics, as well as to define an engaging user experience.

Testing: ability to identify and solve technical problems that may arise during game development.

How to become a Game Developer?

A good level knowledge of programming languages and the ability to think creatively about game experiences depend on the expertise of a developer. To acquire these skills, it is increasingly important to follow a dedicated training path. The Three-year BA programme in Creative Technologies (Game address) at NABA offers students technical and cognitive tools for the advanced design of a video game and skills for interactive prototyping of functional scripts on the main game engines. Some of the languages and logic acquired can then be further developed during the two-year course in Creative Media Production.
