The BA was created to prepare artists and professionals in the field of audiovisual creations, in particular in the branch of cinema, in both live action productions and animations, and in all the traditional, contemporary and future applications including their hybrid products. The dynamic nature of this industry and of new technologies assumes the outlining, even in the short term, of new professional roles, and the BA lays the foundations to keep up with these changes.
Over the BA, students will have the opportunity to gain skills in:
FIRST YEAR
It introduces students to the basic tools to approach the audio-visual and animation. Students learn the skills necessary to undertake film projects, documentaries, tv and web series, video contents for web and communication. Guided by lecturers with great didactic and professional experience, students deal with theoretical, project-based and lab courses of history of cinema and video, multimedia dramaturgy, storytelling and screenwriting, linear audiovisuals, camera operation techniques, sociology of new media, sound design, languages of contemporary art, basics of animation.
SECOND YEAR
Guides students towards further improvement in the field by choosing one of the programme specialisations (Filmmaking or Animation) and through specialising studies in direction, creative writing, direction of photography, interactive storytelling, visual effects, 2D-3D animation.
Led by lecturers through practical experiences, students learn how to develop complete projects in the different fields of application, from the concept to the economic, physical and time boundaries, and the requests of the client.
THIRD YEAR
It defines students knowledge and skills and provide the opportunity to independently and professionally manage the complete creative process for audio-visual - fiction or documentary - or animation projects, with regard to the contemporary professional context of production and distribution. By the end of the programme, students develop a personal method and language through specialising courses of direction, media production, multimedia design, copyright, and didactic activities related to the thesis project, in its theoretical and project-based components.

Specialisations: your academic career
It focuses on the topic of audiovisual productions for cinema, web, tv series, music videos as well as for social networks communication, providing students with the design tools to deal with the ideation, pre-production and post-production phases.
The specialisation aims to develop the students' theoretical and practical skills in the audiovisual design and production. Starting from the creative aspects – from concept to screenplay and development - students deal with all the technical phases of a professional project, from pre-production to direction, from cinematography to editing, post-production, and sound design. The path deepens the research on main themes, styles, technologies, and design typologies in the contemporary audiovisual scenario to train young authors, directors and professionals.
The student acquires the tools for the production of animation projects, from writing and art direction to stop-motion, 2D and 3D animation techniques.
The creation of characters and worlds, and the experimentation in the language field are the main topics of the BA. Starting from the learning of the different digital animation techniques, students have the possibility to enhance their capacities of story-telling and personal vision. The specialisation provides the tools for the production of a thesis project, using 2D animation, stop-motion, and basic skills of 3D animation, and enables students to gain a solid awareness of the animation practices for the artistic and professional field.

Design and Applied Arts Department Head
Luca Poncellini is an architect and a designer with a PhD in the History of Architecture and City Planning. As a partner in the architecture office Cliostraat until 2009, he has curated projects and has lectured in Italy and in several countries throughout the world. His works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, at the Van Alen Institute in New York, at ETH in Zürich, at MAGA in Gallarate and at Triennale Milano. In 2008 he co-curated the retrospective exhibition Laszlo Hudec, in collaboration with the Hungarian Consulate in Shanghai. Since 2013 he has been the Course Leader of the MA in Interior Design. Between 2015 and 2019 directed the research lab and the project C-Park. Since 2019 he has been Design and Applied Arts Department Head.
Vincenzo Cuccia has a degree in Cultural Heritage from Università Statale di Milano and in Editing from the Milan Scuola Civica di Cinema e Nuovi Media. As part of his previous professional experience, he worked as an editor in advertising and television, where he collaborated with the RAI (Milan tv broadcast production area) on entertainment, culture and information channels. After working in the SAE Institute since 2009 as lecturer and then Academic Coordinator and Manager of the activity of undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the Creative Media campuses of Milan, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Brussels, Madrid, Paris and Stockholm, since 2017 he has been BA in Media Design and Multimedia Arts Course Leader while from 2021 he is Media Design and New Technologies Area Leader.
Alessandro Bertante was born in Alessandria in 1969, he has always lived in Milan. He is author of the essays Re Nudo (2005, NDA) and Contro il ’68 (2007, Agenzia X). Among his novels: Al Diavul (2008, Marsilio), winner of Premio Chianti, Nina dei lupi (2011 Marsilio, 2019 nottetempo), Premio Strega finalist and winner of Premio Rieti, Estate Crudele (2013 Rizzoli), winner of Premio Margherita Hack and Gli ultimi ragazzi del secolo (Giunti 2016), winner of Premio Selezione Campiello.
He is an Italian filmmaker. In the last 15 years he has directed several music videos for famous artists such as Francesco Gabbani, Baustelle, Verdena, Planet Funk, Vinicio Capossela. He has also worked as film-editor of dozens of international film documentaries, including "Megunica” about the famous street-artist BLU, “Zanetti Story” about the Inter captain Javier Zanetti, and the award-winning “Bad Weather”.
