As part of the Grand Tour AFAM project, funded by the NRRP – Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme, NABA presents “Story First: cosa ci facciamo con questa Intelligenza Artificiale?”, two days of events taking place at the NABA Campus in Rome (Via Ostiense, 92) on April 11 and at Casa del Cinema in Rome (Largo Marcello Mastroianni, 1) on April 12.

Through dedicated workshops, conferences, live performances, stand-up comedy, a round table on the role of artificial intelligence in screenwriting and education, a presentation on the current state of copyright, and insights from the AI observatory of the Writers Guild Italia, participants will be invited to reflect on the costs and benefits of generative AI, in order to foster critical awareness and explore its potential.

NABA presents “Story First: cosa ci facciamo con questa Intelligenza Artificiale?”: the events scheduled for April 11

Among the scheduled events of “Story First: cosa ci facciamo con questa Intelligenza Artificiale?”, on April 11 at the NABA Campus in Rome, from 5:15 PM to 6:00 PM there will be a talk with Andrea Marzulli (Audiovisual Director at SIAE) entitled “Intelligenza artificiale e diritto d’autore”. Artificial intelligence represents both an opportunity and a risk for authors and their copyright. Do AI models need the authors’ authorisation to train them to generate new works? Can the output of generative AI be protected? Under what conditions and in favour of whom? Can copyright law once again adapt to a technological landscape that seems capable of doing without it? This talk will address these and other questions.

From 6:15 PM to 7:00 PM on the same day, the workshop with Writers Guild Italia will take place: “Diritti e rovesci, come si protegge un creativo ai tempi della AI” with Giorgio Glaviano (screenwriter for cinema and TV, author, teacher of serial writing techniques, and writer of essays on international series and feature films for Dino Audino Editore) and Vinicio Canton (screenwriter and NABA Academic Master in Screenwriting for Series lecturer). The workshop will provide an opportunity to analyse generative AI systems and the European and national regulatory framework for the protection of intellectual property. The session will explore the explicit and implicit demands and offerings of generative Artificial Intelligence platforms, providing an overview of how creative works can be protected and how artificial intelligence can be strategically used in contemporary and future artistic production.

The day of April 11 will conclude with the opening of the exhibition of students' AI-generated audiovisual projects, which will take place from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Spazio MAGMA, NABA Campus in Rome.

NABA presents “Story First: cosa ci facciamo con questa Intelligenza Artificiale?”: the events scheduled for April 12

The day of April 12 will begin from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Casa del Cinema in Rome (Largo Marcello Mastroianni, 1) with the presentationNext Gen AI. Opportunità e lati oscuri dell’AI”, curated by Alfredo Valeri (Associazione Civita and RUFA). The talk will focus on the outcomes of a research project conducted as part of the XV Civita Report, aiming to explore the level of awareness, usage practices, opinions and concerns related to the use of Artificial Intelligence applications (with a focus on the Generative component) among both young Italians aged 18–34 and creative professionals and authors registered with SIAE.

This will be followed, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, by the round table “AI, cinema e audiovisivo: tra professione e formazione” dedicated to the theme of AI in education and screenwriting for cinema, with the participation of two of the project’s partner academies, IED and RUFA. Representing NABA will be Vinicio Canton and Michele Aquila (MA in Creative Media Production Course Leader). The discussion will be moderated by Vincenzo Cuccia (NABA Media Design and New Technologies and Set Design Area Leader) and Francesca Staasch (screenwriter and director, Academic Master in Screenwriting for Series Course Leader).

The event will continue on April 12 with a Live AI Cinema Performance, taking place from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, again at Casa del Cinema: using a range of software to generate images, sounds, music and dialogue with AI, director Andrea Gatopoulos will create a short AI film live. A Q&A session will be held during the production.

Finally, from 5:15 PM to 6:45 PM, the screening and presentation of the short film “The Kraken” by the duo Christian Bisceglia (screenwriter, director and producer) and Ascanio Malgarini (screenwriter, designer, digital effects supervisor and director specialised in generative AI) is scheduled, followed by a talk on the making of the film, the creative process, and the collaboration during the writing and development of the story: what changes in terms of creative possibilities and working methods with the introduction of AI?

Contributions from Claudio Morici (comedian, writer, performer, and copywriter) will animate the session: he will engage in a dialogue with his very own AI, Alexo. The event will close with a Q&A session moderated by Francesca Staasch.
